Seeds and TMcAFS Money

Lucy, Nicco, and I starting seeds. If all goes well with these wee plants, we'll be selling them at the craft fair this April!

Jake holding his envelope of "money." It was decided that play money they came upon would be turned into Teddy McArdle money. Someone had the brilliant idea to make brownies. It was sweet seeing the kids standing in line eagerly prepared to pay for their brownies.

A Feast!

We Albrights were honored to host school at our house today. Nicholas, upon arrival, immediately requested our book of dinosaurs and sat engrossed for quite awhile. There was general enjoyment of each other's company, book reading, and bike riding to our local park with a cozy feast to top it all off. Liliana introduced us to a traditional Colombian breakfast: hot chocolate mixed with a molinillo, pericos (scrambled eggs with onion and tomato), and arepas (thick corn tortilla which, in this case, became the scrumptious slate for pizza).

Back to school!

This is our first week back to school and we're having lots of fun. Today we played school (including reading All of a Kind Family, a spelling lesson, a discussion of the gregorian calendar and the concept of centuries, and some drawing and math), had morning circle, played make believe, took a walk to get lunch and to spend time at the tank park (where we discussed the origins of obscenities, and speculated about why people might write bad words on a public gazebo), had Spanish class, did flips, and now we're all working together on the blog.

We're all happy to be back at school!

Thursday, December 18, 2008

It's beginning to look a lot like... well, like this is going to be the last day of school, this year. We're closed for two weeks, starting Monday, December 22, and were expecting to have our pre-Holiday party tomorrow, but the weather reports are starting to look ominous. And so we're having our second day of spontaneous low-key celebration, just in case we don't see each other tomorrow.

We're celebrating all the winter holidays, but we're also celebrating news, this morning, that we're going to be able to stay at the church for the rest of the school year! We're very grateful to everyone who's making this possible.

It's been a good week. On Tuesday, Liliana led the (No) Free Lunch discussion, talking about water, about the water cycle and the "virtual water" that is used in the production of all the products we use. Yesterday the gymnastics class took a jog to the tank park, and the rest of us meandered over there at our own pace, admiring the magic that the recent snow, ice and rain had wrought. The lacy effects of the gentle rain falling on top of the new snow were really lovely, and we explored all the places fairies might be hiding. When we all got back to the school, we celebrated with hot cocoa. This morning we spent some time working out conflicts over the use of the gymnastics equipment. We also spent quite a bit of time setting up our new blogs. Lucy and I put together a map of the school, and Lucy created a great map legend.

I'm looking forward to vacation, but I'm going to miss all the adventures we could be having at school. Happy Holidays, everybody!
